- Gog Grounds -

This particular project, Gog Grounds, focuses on football grounds across North Wales and the communities that surround them. These are places that hold real meaning for the people who use them, often kept alive by volunteers and local supporters with little or no expectation of financial return. They’re spaces that bring people together, and even though they may not have the glamour of top-tier stadiums, they have something far more powerful, a deep connection to the land, the town, and the people.

I’ve chosen to highlight some of the most visually and atmospherically unique grounds in the region. In Broughton, for example, the roar of the Airbus Beluga flying overhead adds a surreal backdrop to grassroots football. In Blaenau Ffestiniog, towering mountains cast dramatic shadows over the pitch, reminding you of the area’s industrial past. And in Conwy, the ground is placed where the land meets the sea.

The inspiration for this series came from ‘European Fields’ by Hans van der Meer. His photographs of community football across Europe immediately brought to mind the rugged, picturesque, and deeply local pitches I’d grown up around in Wales. There’s something universal and yet deeply personal about football at this level, and through this project I hope to celebrate the uniqueness of these places and the people who keep them going.
